Week 157: 2017-02-18

A mixed week overall.  It started out fairly productive, but by the middle of the week I got some unfortunate news about a deal that I have been working on for a while (since December). Of course this made my mind go into a tailspin about uncertainty. I have to say, that it really feels like I just cannot get ahead.

Words of the week:
  •  Big companies: I am starting to wonder, if I am destined to work in big companies.  I sometimes, find them really hard to engage with, and find that some of the people that work at these companies are not the most inspiring or creative. Of course I realize that this is generalization.
  • Consulting:  I do like the consulting work that I do. I find that it’s a nice way to engage with companies people and work with them. I think there’s some interesting things that can be done there, but I still have to figure out the revenue model around it.  I do like the consulting work that I do. • Diversified revenue:  since the start of the year, I have been thinking a lot about diversified revenue. The idea of how do I make money in different ways. I think there are some creative outlets that I can pursue and I think there are some services that I can build.  There are two parts that I struggle with: 1)  how do I not devalue the work that I’m doing, especially with some of the professional services; 2) how do I make sure that all these different revenue streams ladder up to a coherent and consistent story about what I do. I do feel like I’ve been sitting on the sidelines for too long, so I just need to get into it and do it and learn from it.
Number of the Week:
  • 5:  As in 5 g.  Through some research I’ve been doing this week, I found that that’s the average weight of a plastic bag. It’s not a lot when you think about it but it adds up when you start to add the number of bags of people consume. Of course that doesn’t take into account any of the long-term negative and I don’t impact of having plastic bags.
